Consumer Corner: Zing Bars, Created by Nutritionists

September 19, 2011 | In: Consumer Corner, Sports Nutrition

Zing-a-ling, your tongue will sing, when you eat a Zing Bar.

I was curious about these 100% natural, high protein, wheat-, soy protein- and gluten-free energy bars, especially because they were created by four nutritionists.

Personally, I am not a big granola bar eating, energy bar touting woman. Definitely not one of those, “have a bar with me just in case” kind of gals. Check my purse. You’ll see. No food.

But I do like to know what is out there on the market, and I do get asked for my opinion on these sorts of things.

Just the Facts, Ma’am:

Zing Bars are Gluten & Wheat free

All Zing Bars are wheat free & gluten free.  According to the Zing Bar website, they use the ELISA method to test each flavor for gluten (and the gliadin subfraction) at an independent laboratory.  Gluten-sensitive and celiac patients will appreciate that all Zing flavors test below 5ppm gliadin and 10 ppm gluten, which is the lowest amount detectible with current technology.

Zing Bars are Soy Free

Soy is a common food allergen and many people have an intolerance or allergy to soy protein. If you’re a parent trying to eliminate soy, you know that soy is everywhere! Rest assured, these are soy-less.

Zing Bars are 100% Natural

All Zing Bars are made from hormone-free, antibiotic-free ingredients and contain nothing artificial. This means no high-fructose corn syrup and no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners or chemical preservatives of any kind. A wholesome choice for adults and kids and I know many of you will be glad to know this!

But Beware

If you have peanut or tree nut allergies, this is not the bar for you. The Zing Bars use a variety of nuts to construct their “nut butter base” (specifically almond, cashew or peanut), which makes them loaded with healthy fats, but not for the allergic to nuts folks.

Zing Bars could be a great stand-in snack for the older child or athlete, but use with caution with toddlers and young children, due to the high protein content (too much total protein during the day could be harmful for little ones).

Lemme tell ya what I think:

I have tasted all the Zing Bars, and of course, if you know me well, you’d expect my forthcoming opinion.

I loved the chocolate coconut (reminiscent of an Almond Joy candy bar), followed by the rest of the chocolate flavored options. Oh, and the rest of the flavors were yummy too, I just don’t get as excited about fruit-flavored bars.

Does this make me a new nutrition bar-hustling mamma? Well, I am an old dog, so this would be a new trick to learn…but I think I will order a box of Chocolate Coconut Zing Bars.

To find Zing Bars near you, check this map. Or purchase directly from their website.
